Semi-Custom Process

Semi-Custom Process

Thank you for your interest in a semi-custom at Winnowing Wovens!  If you are new to handwovens/the semi-custom process, here is a quick FAQ/what to expect!

What is a semi-custom? This is when the warp is set, and you are able to customize your own piece!  Things you can pick include: length, weft fiber, weft color(s), finishing method (ie hemmed tails or style of fringe), & other design add ons.

With semicustoms, the warp colors, dye style, weave structure & warp fiber are already determined.  These details are typically all available prior to semi-customs being advertised.

How do I get a semi-custom slot? When I have a new warp coming up, I will advertise it in the Winnowing Wovens Facebook group.  If you see an inspiration/style you like, please reach out and let me know! I try to keep warps open for a minimum of 48 hours prior to closing.  Pending interest, a draw may be completed if I am unable to accommodate everyone.  Once the warp is measured and dyed, there may be additional length available so you are always welcome to check, though this is generally limited to 1-2.5 meters.

What weft fibers are available? Please reach out directly! I plan to add this info and will add a link but do not have it online just yet.

What other add ons will I get to pick from? Please see this page for pricing & examples of add ons I can include for your piece!

What weave can I pick between? Each custom holder is able to select their own set of weaves -- this information will be available on the post advertising the warp in the Winnowing Wovens Facebook group.  If you can't find it please reach out.

Do you offer any conversions?  Currently I offer cowl conversions & ringsling conversions with the following shoulder types: gathered, hybrid, floating gathered.  If you're looking for a different conversion type, I'm happy to ship directly to your converter of choice -- please let me know prior to weaving!

When/how do I pay?  I do not require a deposit on semi-customs typically.  Payment is due in full once the warp is on the loom & your weft is dyed (and you approve it!).  If you need a payment plan, please reach out to discuss prior to commiting to a piece -- these are approved on a case by case basis.  Payment is via this Shopify website, which allows for PayPal, Shop Pay, or a debit/credit card.  Often there is a payment plan option built in as well (ie Shop Pay or PayPal Pay in 4), but these will vary between individuals and is outside of my control.  Semi-customs do not ship until they are paid in full.

What will shipping cost? If you'd like to get an idea on shipping, you can add something from our ready to ship section to your cart and fill out your address.  UPS and USPS are both available as shipping options.

What does a timeline look like for a semi-custom project?

Here is a rough idea on timeline -- please keep in mind that longer projects make take an extra week or two to wrap up, or sick children in my house may cause a brief delay.  I do have some extra time built in though too to this schedule!

If you have a specific date you would like your piece by, please communicate this with me.  It may not be possible but I will work with you.

  • Week 1: customs holder finalizes details; weaver posts inspiration in chatter
  • Week 2: guaranteed customs length closes, warp is measured & dyed.  Photos will be shared! If you've requested length, this is a commitment to purchase and cannot be canceled once this closes.  If you'd like to adjust length though you are welcome to reach out to see if it is available.
  • Week 3/4: warp goes on the loom.  Once the warp is on the loom, I will send photos and will need final decisions for your piece.  I will dye your weft(s) and send photos for you to approve!  Once all of these things happen, your payment in full will be due.
  • Week 4/5/6: weaving! I will send on the loom photos at least once.
  • Week 6/7: once the entire warp is woven, I will cut all pieces of at the same time.  They will all be washed, dried, ironed, finished (hems sewn, fringes twisted if needed!), middle markers added, care tags sewn on, off loom photos taken, pieces packed up and shipped out! If you've opted for a ringsling conversion, I will send photos of your piece of the loom with available sling ring options for you to select from, & have it converted.  Photos & packing often take place the same day so you may get these photos after you get a tracking label.

A quick note on timeline -- I have a part time job out of the house, & am a mama to three littles.  Weaving is treated as a part time job and my goal is to get you a piece you'll love ASAP but there are times there may be delays due to sick children or school breaks.  Additionally, longer warps may take an extra week or two to finalize.  The timeline listed above is just a rough estimate!
